Project Backpack Buddies exists to ensure that every foster child enters their new placement with a sense of dignity and belonging. We envision a world where no child is forced to carry their belongings in a trash bag, but instead receives a personalized backpack filled with essentials that provide comfort and stability. Our goal is to be a source of support and compassion during a critical moment in a child’s life, fostering a sense of self-worth and hope for their future.

George Rosales, hailing from Wenatchee, Washington, is the founder of Project Backpack Buddies, a nonprofit organization created with a profound sense of purpose. The inspiration for this initiative arose shortly after George began his career with a state agency that provides essential services to foster youth in Washington, ranging from ages 6 to 17.

In his work with children in emergent placements, George observed a disheartening trend—many children were moving from one placement to another with their belongings in trash bags. Witnessing the emotional and psychological toll this took on these vulnerable youth, George knew that something more needed to be done.

This realization sparked the inception of Project Backpack Buddies. The organization's mission is to provide these children with a sense of dignity and belonging by offering them a bag they can call their own
